This piece marks the expansion of the flotation device series to include swimming aids and pool toys. Inflatable armbands are typically worn by children though many have been replaced by larger swim training vests today. The objects still evoke childhood and the slow process of learning to enjoy and move within water.
In this wall-hung piece, I combine a visible welded aluminum armature with sewn soft sculptural elements; re-used vinyl billboard images of human skin. The water wings are distributed unequally; one of them is modeled as if by a mannequin and five more crowd together and drop off from the opposite mechanical arm. The sculpture is a cyborg, with human elements where body extensions should be and robotic limbs frozen in place.
