Table Cloth

This piece is a companion artwork to Great Circle, produced in the same year. Sewn to the standard dimensions of a cocktail table tablecloth in the US, the piece asks us whose labor literally puts food on the table? Shown on the wall, on a table/pedestal, or on the ground, the piece takes on various degrees of significance a a in relation to its’ surroundings.

By playing with the idea of a utilitarian surface as a wall-hanging and a work of contemporary art as a functional surface, I evoke high & low culture and value expectations around manual labor. This piece is sewn from a combination of used work wear from Europe and found torn jeans from the US. Original garment sizes range from adult to child sizes, leading observant viewers to ask if the work evoked by this innocuous geometric assemblage includes child labor and work for which no industrial uniform exists. What does it mean to get dressed for work if nobody recognizes your uniform?
