Foliated

This series of original works on paper was produced with left over stencils from the a 2018 public art project (Rare Bird). The 13 pieces in the “Foliated” series look like prints from afar and reveal themselves to be original painted works on paper from up close. Each image includes a variety of layered cut-out shapes, evoking the leaves of tropical plants, in pink hues produced from mixed media pigments and various binders on paper..

I made these pieces a year after my son’s birth, during a period in which I had begun to work exclusively with the constraints and contradictions of a zero waste approach to art. I producing sculptures and installations with a material connection to particular places, and then made drawings and two-dimensional works with the residue from my own sculptural practice and that of other artists. Rather than discarding leftover paper, paint, thread, fabric, wood, plaster etc., I incorporated this waste into my creative process. Each form of waste became the impetus for a new body of work that then generates its’ own waste, restarting anew the cycle of production.
