A Steady Hand

In my work, safety gear that used to protect bodies from harm now becomes an ambiguous alert, attracting and repelling us from diagrams of geometric earthworks.

This triptych of square, sewn forms on camouflage was produced as a variant on an earlier, larger steamrolled print, below, that aligned 3 representations of Hopewell Culture Earthworks located in proximity to each other, in modern-day Ohio.

Printed diagrams recreate scale drawings by archaeologist William F. Romain showing the geometrically interrelated natures of several Hopewell Earthworks. Cut-outs and sections of neon safety vest both extend and obscure the lines of the original diagrams, evoking repetition, openings, and borders at the scale of the body and of the land. The pieces can be shown individually or as a progression of forms.
