Pillow Talk

This early piece was carved from pink granite in Vermont in the United States. It built on an earlier piece in marble, carved in Cracow, Poland, which reproduced a fluffy pillow with the empty impression of where a head had once lay (below). This time, I added a large, surreal pair of human lips protruding from one side of the sculpture. The mouth animates and feminizes the original object, suggesting whispers and breath coming from within the cold, smooth stone.
I received production support through an “Artist Angel” Fellowship at the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in Vermont, during a workshop with Allen Williams.

In this work, my subject matter evolved from the body as such to the traces of the body. In the sculpture, we see the creases in a pillow where a head had once rested, recalling Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ black and white billboards honoring his deceased partner, Untitled (1991) as well as Tracey Emin’s My Bed (1998).
