Protection

This sculpture has was conceived around 2009 and has since been extended and modified for various exhibition contexts. As an installation, it is shown with anywhere from one to several sculptural elements, each composed of 5 lengths of hemp rope, connected at either end to sculpted human hands cast in transparent resin. The lengths of rope as well as the disposition of the various elements varies according to the exhibition context. Thus, a length of rope can criss-cross a white-walled gallery space or wrap itself around a tree in a public park. The meaning of the piece is heavily influenced by its surroundings; I aim to show the work in sites where the work at once protects and obstructs anything that it is connected to.
