Paper Dolls

This temporary artwork was produced from hand-made paper pulp produced from dried animal fodder (papier fait à main) that was cast upon a life-size realistic figurative sculpture in plaster. I learned the paper-making technique in the fiber arts studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, Poland and experimented with fusing wet swaths of paper together to produce 3-dimensional forms. Dismembered, 2005, Handmade Paper, 55” x 80” x 10” portrays a human body standing with its’ extremities rearranged on the surface of the “page.” Different paper molds produced from the anterior and posterior sides of the figure (sculpted from life) produce an image-as-pattern that continues off the edges of the visible artwork and into the room in which the work is displayed.
