Grounded

By replacing human legs with an oversize braided length or ball of string, the work invites us to reflect on woven ropes as metaphors for the human body as a whole.

This heavy soft sculpture is produced from 20 meters of repurposed rope formerly used in agriculture. A transparent set of large male human feet is cast upon each end of the rope with clear Epoxy resin. Individual strings from each braid are visible within each foot, echoing the nervous system underneath our skin.

Displayed differently every time it is installed, the form of the sculpture can be modified by the exhibition spaces in which it is shown. The piece may be curled up upon itself, hung from the ceiling or between two walls, or attached to additional hooks/installation elements. The different actual and potential display positions denote different postures for the entire body; coiled, bound, outstretched, tense, limp, etc.

The expression to “bind/tie someone hand And foot,” means to restrict a person’s freedom to do something. What happens if our feet are always, already, bound and not tied together by an external object?
