This sculpture is a wooden puzzle game measuring 120 cm x 83 cm. The form was created by layering the outlines of every city and every country in which I’ve lived for more than 3 months. The resulting personal geography created a puzzle game that visitors can play and interact with.

Ancient measurements of distance were based on the human body. They were calculated in relation to the length of a foot, the length of a stride, the span of a hand, and the breadth of a thumb. For my project, Human Scale, I visited Monza by foot, along a path created by tracing the contours of my hand on the tourist map of the city. I walked over 25 kilometers, mainly is areas outside of the old town center. At various points throughout my journey, I created stencils based on the hand-shaped image of path. These urban interventions are signposts that say “I was here.” The marks appear on both temporary and more permanent surfaces, and will erode over time. By temporarily claiming abandoned or unused city spaces with a symbol drawn in human scale, and displayed at hand level, I explore relationship between the human body and public space.

This series of early metal work, Struggle, was realized during a critical time in my artistic development. By exploring depictions of the body cast in a stylized manner, in aluminum, sought to understand how our understanding of the body as a whole is different from our appreciation for various body parts. In the works, each imagined segment (arms, knees, feet) was wrapped with string, visually connecting the esthetic isolation of body parts to metaphors for the physical subjugation of people and animals. The objects portray fixity, the state of being immobilized, with roughly hewn, pulsating muscles forever trapped not only in cast metal, but in cast metal strings on the surface of that metal. Because the subject matter remains surreal and without a context, it portrays struggle in a generalized way, rather than critiquing any one particular historical episode.
